Vintage Highland Park Bathroom

Project type

Bathroom Renovation

Date

September 2024

Location

Highland Park

This was an original 1930's bathroom. Unfortunately, like the others I have had the privilege of renovating, the tile was not able to be salvaged.
We wanted to keep the essence of the original tile work, but updated and more so aligned to the feel of the rest of the home. Because the home is pulling french cottage with blue and whites, we shifted to a lovely Annie Selke Azure tile with matching trim along with a beveled large format white subway.
To elevate the bathroom, we added touches of marble. Very careful not to create a "fussy" space for the young boys of the house. The floor is a polished marble mosaic with touches of blue, similar to the yellow and white mosaic flooring that was existing. Then to pull it up through the room, we added dolomite white marble to the arch. This was because of a few reasons:
- The shape of the tub arch required small formate tiles, that were finished on the long end. We could easily polish the marble ends, whereas porcelain is much harder source.
- Minimal potential staining to these tiles
- They were on sale and matched the flooring (white and azul floret)

We kept the overall staples of a 1930's bath with a single color story, chair rails, tiles throughout, and durable mosaic floors.

One additional thing we did, controversial, was remove the closet next to the shower. We kept the nook and placed a navy blue cabinet with. shelving and drawers. Ideally we would have done a built-in, which was popular of that time period, however the cost was prohibitive for the client at the time, so we modified the plans. This solved the issue of having multiple doors in the space, and gave more practical storage for their needs, as well as freed up some visual space.
